Chess in the Ruhr: clubs, club nights and opens
Chess in the Ruhr is club chess first. Almost every town from Duisburg and Moers on the Rhine to Hamm and Unna in the east has its Verein or the chess department of a sports club, usually with a fixed club night, often a Friday, and teams in the district leagues. Around them run town championships and opens, youth training, and chess afternoons in Dortmund meeting centres and a Mülheim library.

Chess960 in the Ruhr
Chess960 turns up in the Ruhr inside club calendars rather than as an open event: Schachverein Unser Fritz in Wanne-Eickel and Schachclub Hansa in Dortmund each list a Schach960 tournament on one of their September club nights, between the regular rounds. No open Chess960 tournament and no regular Chess960 evening at a venue anyone can walk into appeared in the pages read.
The variant shuffles the pieces of the back rank into one of 960 starting positions before the game, so prepared opening lines lose their hold from the first move. Between those club evenings it can be played online at ch960.com.
Chess960 dates in Ruhr club calendars, as the clubs list them:
- Chess960 tournament, Schachverein Unser Fritz Wanne-Eickel — 11 September 2026
- Chess960 tournament, Schachclub Hansa Dortmund — 18 September 2026
Reading an entry
The guide holds 112 entries, 112 of them current or waiting for a newer trace. They are built from the club database schach.in, the results portals of the Ruhr and Lower Rhine chess federations, FIDE reports on rated tournaments, city press releases and event calendars, and the clubs' own pages, all opened on .
No list here is a ranking: the entry with the freshest dated evidence simply comes first. Where the pages are silent on a point, the entry says "not stated by sources" instead of guessing. The checking method page explains the status lines, the three kinds of source and what the guide leaves out.
New club night, new room?
Ruhr clubs merge, move into a parish hall or a school, and shift their club night when a new league season starts. If an entry has fallen behind, or a Verein, a youth group, a town championship or a chess afternoon is missing, send a short note with a link to the page that shows it.
